This tutorial focuses on how you can gain access to other
restricted users folders in WinXP/2K. OK as a restricted
network user, you normally can't access other users folders
on the network. Well using even if Admin block out 'File
and Printer Sharing', you the user can still access another
users folder and its contents.
It is a fairly easy process that doesn't require you to
have special previlages. Basically, create a folder in your
profile that you want others to have access to. Then right
click this folder and click 'Properties'. Now up the top of
this box click the 'Security Tab'. Here you can view the
users that can access that folder and the access rights
they have to it. Now click the 'Add' button and in the box
that is displayed, type the username of the person that you
want to give access to that folder and click 'OK'.
Now in the list of people who have access to that folder
you will see the user that you just added. Click their name
and in the box below tick the rights that you want them to
have (Usually read/execute/List).
Now get the user who you added to create a shortcut to the
folder you shared eg:
'\\NetworkDRV\Users\YourUserName\FolderYourSharing' Now
that the shortcut has been created, the person can execute
it and will now have access to the folder your shared. This
is great when someone has a game that you all want to play.
You can also change the access rights of others, who by
defalt have access to that folder (EG staff). Now for some
fun, if you can convince someone to give you access to their
folder, fool them into giving you 'Full Control'. Once you
have full control access the folder they shared and go to
its properties (eg once in the folder right click
somewhere, not on a file and go 'Properties'), then click
the security tab, click on the users name sharing the
folder and change their access previledges so that they cant
access the folder.
